The investigation of the effect of seed bed cover materials on the plant species of meadow mixes and the insects recorded on the above ground plant part.

The existence of artificial meadows in modern urban environment is nowadays a necessity. Artificial meadows in urban speces upgrade the environment and the life quality of its residents. Artificial meadows can be established either in terrestrial places like parks or squares or in buildings roof.

In this thesis is examined the effect of two seedbed coverage materials -SOIL-FIX and HYDRO-MULCH ”UE”- in field and roof conditions on the plants establishment. In order to examine this, there were used seed mixtures of wild vegetable and aromatic plants.

In the field were sown the mixture of wild vegetable plant species (12 species) and the mixture of aromatic species (9 species), each of them in 9 plots (3 CONTROL + 3 SOIL-FIX + 3 SOIL-FIX + HYDRO-MULCH “UE”). In each plot are examined the number of flowered and non-flowered plants, and the mean height of established plants. Also, number and dry weight of established grass and broadleaf weeds have been measured in the field.

In roof, it was sown only the mixture of aromatic plants (9 species) in 18 plots (6 CONTROL + 6 SOIL-FIX + 6 SOIL-FIX + HYDRO-MULCH “UE”). In each plot have been measured the number of flowered and non-flowered plants, the mean height of them and the mean coverage area of established plants. Also, there have been measured the number and the dry weight of established grass and broadleaf weeds.

Finally, there have been measured in two periods (August and September) insects on the aboveground part of the established plants in field and roof conditions in three times of day; morning, midday and afternoon.

From this thesis, effect of the used seabed coverage materials on plants establishment is far from clear. However, the use of combination of seabed coverage materials SOIL-FIX and HYDRO-MULCH “UE” in some cases showed better results than SOIL-FIX used alone. Also, additional research should be done in order to understand in more depth about the effect of seabed coverage materials on plants establishment in field and roof conditions.
